Growing your business through referrals - are you asking for it?

There is an old saying that goes something like this “The best compliment you can give me is a referral” and in many cases this is true. If your clients are referring their contacts to you, it is a sign that they are happy with the service you provide and are willing to put their reputation on the line by referring you.

At P&L Technology we believe in the power of referrals and really some of our most valued clients have come from partner referrals and recommendations. Really, when you consider how to effectively grow a service business you must rely on your reputation, and nothing says you are doing things right more than a referral.

So, how do you go about earning referrals? First and foremost, you must provide service to the best of your abilities and in an accountable and honest way - i.e. achieve high customer satisfaction. Once you have a customer base that is satisfied and, hopefully, impressed with what you, do the next step is simple. ASK FOR IT!

There are many strategies that can lead to referrals such as creating referral partner programs or sending out letters of reference. However, in my opinion, nothing beats directly asking your partners for a referral. If you feel comfortable enough to sit down with a client and ask them for a referral it shows several things. First, you are confident enough in your service and the method in which it has been delivered that you want others to experience it. Secondly, you value and respect the client enough that you want to do business with people they do business with.

An important thing to remember when asking for referrals, and one which will solidify a good referral partnership, is to return the favor. It’s a two way street. Simply ask “What can I do to refer others to you?” or “What sort of clients are you looking for, I would love to help?” It’s one thing to ask for a referral, it’s another to give one. If it works out, hopefully your partner will think of you each time they are working with your referral and want to continue the valued partnership.
